Malabrigo – Montevideo, Uruguay

“On this day we arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay, our first port stop of the entire cruise.  Our group embarked on an exciting tour and one of the major highlights of the trip (at least it was for me!) We went on a very rare factory tour of one of the most popular hand-dyed yarn brands in the World.  Malabrigo!!  The owners and staff were very generous with the tour, letting us peek “behind the curtain” just a little to see what it takes to produce their fantastic yarns.  Not only that, but they let us each handpaint a skein or two of our very own Malabrigo sock yarn!  Fantastic!  The handpaint technique isn’t my personal favourite way to get colour onto wool, my skein looks like it could use a little something more, but Michael seemed to have a particular talent for it.  One of the staff complemented him on his work, and said that Michael could have a job at the factory!

After we all had a chance to purchase a significant quantity of yarns, Malabrigo’s owners Antonio and Tobias joined our group for lunch at Al Forno Montevideo, one of their favourite places to eat.  We were treated to a fantastic three course lunch ending with the most delicious Delicia (Dulce de Leche dessert) EVER!!    After lunch (most of us in food and wool coma at this point!) we had a short city tour, with a brief stop by the water for a walk and photos before heading back to the ship!!   I am sure the ship’s security staff got a kick of 35+ knitters carrying huge clear garbage bags of wool back on board!” –Paula
